"Desert Sunrise" Oil on Belgian linen, 11x14
I like the way the mountains are the first to get the morning sun. The top will glow a pale pink, and it will gradually fade to a purple near the bottom. Keeping the light and shadow areas close in value helps show just how faint the light is. The foreground has yet to receive any sunlight and is kept quite dark. The tips of the saguaro arms reflect a little bit of sky light.
My palette here was: Yellow ochre, cadmium orange, cadmium red light, alizarin crimson, ultramarine blue, and a touch of viridian hue (Holbein brand)
