Plein Air in Papago Park

Here is a quick shot of this morning's sunrise, as seen from on top of Hole in the Rock, in Papago Park. I like this spot because it has a nice, clear view of Four Peaks and the Superstitions.

This time my palette was: Cadmium yellow light, cadmium orange, cadmium red light, dioxazine purple, ultramarine blue, viridian hue (Holbein).

I painted on a panel with a piece of Arches Oil Paper adhered to it. It's a 9x12 panel, and this was painted on the top 5 inches, yielding a 9x5" painting. I like cropping it that way for sunrises and quick studies, as it allows you to fit several studies on one panel. The smaller size allows for finishing even quicker, which is really necessary when painting something that changes rapidly like a sunrise/sunset.
